What happens during a counselling session?

Counselling takes place when a counsellor sees a client in a private and confidential setting to explore a difficulty the client is having. In your first session we will discuss:
  • Why you came for counselling
  • Background (history, recent events)
  • What you want to achieve
  • Feelings that arise from the counselling

I will listen attentively and patiently, without judging.  Drawing on my training, I will encourage you to express your feelings.  I will support you in exploring various aspects of your life and feelings.  Acknowledging the difficulties from your point of view,  I will try to help you see things more clearly, possibly from a different perspective.

My approach is inclusive and relationship-based, drawing on the humanistic work of Carl Rogers.  Working within an ethical framework, I will try to help reduce the confusion you may feel and to better understand the choices you have. I am an integrative counsellor meaning I integrate different approaches into my work and tailor my work to suit the individual client.

Sessions usually last 60 minutes.  One session per week is usual.  I can provide short-term or long-term therapy, according to your needs and requirements.

If you would like to discuss further how I can help, or to request an appointment, please contact me initially via the form on the Make Contact page.
